Updated 23 October 2026. Searches for 'Poonamallee metro opening date' and 'Poonamallee to Vadapalani station list' are still rising, but most pages treat Poonamallee as one stop. It is three, and they serve different households. We re-checked the timetable, MTC's 9 October bus counts for each station and the latest on the westward extension to Sunguvarchatram. For the Poonamallee locality itself, see Poonamallee, Chennai: Buyer's Guide 2026 — Prices, Metro Phase 2, Projects and Risks

Is Poonamallee metro open?

Yes. The Poonamallee Bypass–Vadapalani section of Corridor 4 opened on 11 October 2026 with 11 stations over about 15 km, and regular service began on 12 October (DT Next, 12 October 2026). On the first day it carried 25,474 passengers in about five hours (DT Next, 12 October 2026). The three Poonamallee stations, compared

The fare is ₹10 between Poonamallee Bypass and Poonamallee Bus Stand, the lowest fare slab (DT Next, 29 September 2026).

  • Poonamallee Bypass: the western terminus. Wikipedia's station page (accessed 23 October 2026) lists side platforms, places it near the Chennai Bypass (NH 32) and the Outer Ring Road, and names the Poonamallee depot alongside. MTC counts 1,793 bus trips serving it, the third-lowest on the line (DT Next, 9 October 2026). Likely the most convenient stop if you arrive by car or two-wheeler from the Outer Ring Road side or from Thirumazhisai and Nazarethpet.
  • Poonamallee Bus Stand (Bus Terminus): the next stop east. It has the most bus trips on the line, 5,155, so it is the natural transfer point for anyone arriving by bus from Thiruvallur, Sriperumbudur or the western suburbs (DT Next, 9 October 2026). Wikipedia lists it as a bus interchange with the Poonamallee Bus Terminus.
  • Poonamallee Government Hospital: the third stop, built under the working name Mullaithottam (Wikipedia). MTC counts 4,423 bus trips here (DT Next, 9 October 2026). It is the stop for the town side of Poonamallee High Road.

Poonamallee to Vadapalani metro station list

West to east (DT Next, 12 October 2026): Poonamallee Bypass, Poonamallee Bus Stand, Poonamallee Government Hospital, Karayanchavadi, Kumananchavadi, Kattupakkam, Iyyappanthangal, Thelliyaragaram, Porur Bypass, Porur Junction and Vadapalani. Trains run through six more stations between Porur Junction and Vadapalani without stopping; those open later (Why Valasaravakkam, Saligramam and Four Other Metro Stations Are Skipped on the Poonamallee–Vadapalani Line (2026)).

Will the metro go beyond Poonamallee?

Possibly, but nothing is sanctioned. On 11 October 2026 Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay asked the Prime Minister for early approval of Chennai Metro Phase 3, about 65 km, which includes Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram (DT Next, 11 October 2026). Metro Rail News (27 August 2026), citing The New Indian Express, put that first stage at 27.9 km with 14 elevated stations and an estimated ₹8,779 crore, and said the onward 25 km to Parandur would be considered later based on demand, after the Parandur airport plan was dropped. The same report noted a Live Chennai News report that the wider Poonamallee–Parandur project is likely to be cancelled.

Parking and the last mile at Poonamallee

We found no CMRL statement on parking capacity at any of the three Poonamallee stations. CMRL said in July 2026 that parking would be expanded 'as per the demands' once commercial operations began (DT Next, 28 July 2026). At the western end, where many riders will arrive by two-wheeler from beyond the Outer Ring Road, this is the practical gap to watch. Which Poonamallee station should a buyer plan around?

  • If you will drive or ride to the station, Poonamallee Bypass is the cleanest approach from the Outer Ring Road side; confirm parking first.
  • If someone in the house will use buses as well, homes within reach of the Bus Terminus station get the best bus-and-metro combination on the line.
  • If you live on the town side of the High Road, the Government Hospital station is likely to be the shorter walk.
  • In every case, walk the route at 8.30 am and 8 pm. More on the area: Poonamallee, Chennai · Chennai metro map: /metro/chennai · All stations: Metro Stations Chennai
