Updated 22 October 2026. The guides that rank today still show the opening-week 7 am start. We re-checked the new timetable on both reports and added the day-one ridership, the operator-on-board status, the published fare slabs, the Phase 3 position and what all this means for homes in Porur, Iyyappanthangal, Kattupakkam and Poonamallee.
Poonamallee–Vadapalani metro timings from 23 October
If you board at 6 am on a weekday, plan for a 15-minute wait at worst until 8 am, when the 10-minute peak begins.
- First train: 6 am (was 7 am from 12 October to 22 October).
- Last train: 9 pm from both Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani.
- Monday–Saturday peak, 8–11 am and 5–8 pm: every 10 minutes.
- Monday–Saturday off-peak, including 6–8 am: every 15 minutes.
- Sundays and public holidays: every 15 minutes from 6 am to 9 pm.
- Why: CMRL advanced the start after commuter feedback (DT Next, 21 October 2026).
Which stations are on the line?
DT Next's station list (12 October 2026) gives 11 elevated stations over roughly 15 km, from west to east:
- Poonamallee Bypass
- Poonamallee Bus Stand
- Poonamallee Government Hospital
- Karayanchavadi
- Kumananchavadi
- Kattupakkam
- Iyappanthangal
- Thelliyaragaram
- Porur Bypass
- Porur Junction
- Vadapalani (interchange with Corridor 2 towards Egmore, Chennai Central, Alandur and the airport)
Are all stations open?
Not necessarily. DT Next's opening-day report (12 October 2026) said a station between Porur and Vadapalani was not yet operational, without naming it. CMRL has not published a fresh station-status list in the pages we opened. Before you plan a daily commute, or a home purchase, around one stop, check CMRL's site or the station itself.
How busy is it? Day-one riders and train numbers
- Day one: 25,474 passengers in about five hours of service on Sunday 11 October (DT Next, 12 October 2026).
- Opening: inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 11 October 2026; commercial service ran 4–9 pm that day.
- Length: about 15 km in the station-list report; 14.64 km in the day-one report.
- Cost: around ₹4,900 crore.
- Rolling stock: 36 trains allotted to Corridor 4, with 10 for initial operations.
- Systems: CBTC signalling, platform screen doors, and a double-decker section of about 3.7 km.
Is the Yellow Line driverless?
It is designed for unattended operation, but trains run with two operators on board for now. DT Next reported on 12 October 2026 that full driverless operation is expected by mid-2027, after testing and safety certification.
Poonamallee to Vadapalani metro fare
Fares were fixed in four slabs ahead of the inauguration, from ₹10 to ₹40 (DT Next, 29 September 2026). CMRL said the full fare chart would go up on its website after the inauguration, so check it before you rely on these.
- ₹10: Poonamallee Bypass to Poonamallee Bus Stand.
- ₹20: to stations up to Kattupakkam, including Poonamallee Government Hospital, Karayanchavadi and Kumananchavadi.
- ₹30: to Iyyappanthangal and stations towards Porur.
- ₹40: Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani.
What the 6 am start means for homes near the line
An earlier first train matters most to early-shift workers and to families with school or hospital runs. It makes a metro commute from Poonamallee, Kattupakkam or Iyyappanthangal practical for jobs that start at 7 or 8 am in Vadapalani, Guindy or along Corridor 2. It does not change what homes cost, and we do not forecast prices.
When you compare homes along the line, measure the walk to the nearest open station, not the distance to the corridor. Check whether the station you rely on is open and how you will reach it at 6 am, and ask how the project gets to the main road.

What about Phase 3?
On 11 October 2026, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay urged the Prime Minister to approve Chennai Metro Phase 3 early: about 65 km, including Airport–Kilambakkam and Poonamallee–Sunguvarchatram, and he sought inclusion of Koyambedu–Pattabiram (DT Next, 11 October 2026). This is a request, not a sanction. Routes: Chennai Metro Phase 3 Routes: Kilambakkam, Pattabiram 2026
