Poonamallee is a historic town on the far-western edge of Chennai's built-up area, and from this month it is also the end of the line. The Poonamallee Bypass station is the western terminus of Corridor 4, and NativePlanet lists both Poonamallee Bypass and Poonamallee among the 11 stations in the reported 11 October 2026 opening.
That raises the obvious buyer question: does a terminus station turn a distant town into a commuter suburb? This guide answers with Magicbricks Q3 2026 asking rates, Knight Frank and ANAROCK zone data, Wikipedia locality facts and Property Point listing data, and it keeps the caveats in view.
Location and character
Wikipedia describes Poonamallee as a town in Tiruvallur district, a taluk headquarters governed by a municipality, historically an administrative, commercial and garrison centre. It sits at the end of Mount-Poonamallee Road and Poonamalle High Road. The 2011 census recorded a population of 57,224, per Wikipedia. It has a long history that includes a Portuguese fort built in 1553 and the Varadaraja Perumal temple.
That heritage gives it a settled town centre that newer western suburbs lack. Where you buy within Poonamallee, whether near the old core or toward the bypass, matters more than the town name, so inspect the exact micro-location.
Connectivity: the metro, and its limits
NativePlanet's opening list runs Poonamallee Bypass, Poonamallee, Mullaithottam, Karayanchavadi, Kumananchavadi, Kattupakkam, Iyyappanthangal, Thelliyaragaram, Porur Bypass, Porur Junction and Vadapalani. It reports about 30 minutes from Poonamallee to Vadapalani, 15 trains at 10-minute intervals, operations from 5 am to midnight and fares of ₹10 to ₹40 for local trips. DT Next and UNI give 11 October 2026 as the planned inauguration date; DT Next says the commissioner of railway safety gave final approval in May.
Two limits are worth stating plainly. First, the stretch ends at Vadapalani for now. Wikipedia gives June 2028 for Vadapalani to Lighthouse, so a trip to Central Chennai means a change or a road leg until then. NativePlanet mentions ₹50 for through journeys to the airport, Central or Egmore via interchange, so some interchange option is planned. Second, Wikipedia's longer Yellow Line list names stations such as Poonamallee Government Hospital and Poonamallee Bus Stand that do not match the press names exactly, so check final station names and entrances.
Colleges, schools and hospitals
Wikipedia lists several engineering and arts colleges in Poonamallee, including Alpha College of Engineering, Apollo Engineering College, Panimalar Engineering College, SKR Engineering College, Apollo Arts and Science College and Sastha Engineering College. Its school list includes Arignar Anna Government Higher Secondary School, Christ Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Holy Crescent Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Jeya Jeya Sankara International School and New St. Joseph's Matriculation Higher Secondary School, among others.
For healthcare, Wikipedia's page on Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences places its dental college, management school and law school at Poonamallee and its medical college at nearby Thandalam. A search for Panimalar Medical College Hospital places it at Varadharajapuram, Poonamallee on Bangalore Trunk Road. We could not verify the bed counts of either from an independent source, so we do not quote them.
Price levels
Magicbricks' Q3 2026 data (updated October 2026) shows multistorey apartments at an average ₹7,576 per sq ft, unchanged quarter on quarter, within a range of ₹5,751 to ₹9,400. Residential houses average ₹6,984 per sq ft (up 13% quarter on quarter) and plots about ₹41,805 per sq yard (up 8%). House and plot movements on a portal can swing with a handful of listings, so treat the quarterly jumps cautiously.
Compare with Avadi, a neighbouring western belt, at ₹6,188 per sq ft for apartments on Magicbricks in the same quarter. Poonamallee is priced above Avadi and below Manapakkam (₹8,514).
Projects
Property Point currently lists one project on this belt. The listing data is not an independent audit; check RERA yourself.
- Casagrand Ventra (Kattupakkam, Poonamallee High Road): 2, 3 and 4 BHK, ₹1.01 crore to ₹3.37 crore, new launch, listed possession April 2030 (RERA TNRERA/2/BLG/0119/2026). Kattupakkam is a station on the reported opening list. The 2030 possession is a long horizon; weigh the carrying cost.
Pros
- Terminus status and two stations at the reported opening, with a stated 30-minute run to Vadapalani.
- Pricing below most of the Mount-Poonamallee Road belt, per Magicbricks.
- A real town centre with colleges, schools and temples.
- Houses and plots are tracked separately by Magicbricks here, a mix Central Chennai lacks; Knight Frank describes Central Chennai as supply-constrained.
Cons and risks
- Slow absorption in the zone. ANAROCK's Q1 2026 report shows West Chennai, the zone that includes Poonamalle, with a 14% share of sales, a 40% fall quarter on quarter and a 22% fall year on year. Knight Frank's H1 2026 figures show West Chennai's quarters-to-sell at 8.1 versus 4.4 citywide.
- Distance. A terminus is a long way out; the 30-minute run is to Vadapalani, not to your office.
- Possession horizons of several years on new launches.
- Micro-location varies between the older town core and newer layouts; inspect the exact plot.
- No sourced rent data for Poonamallee.
Who it suits
Buyers with workplaces or colleges along the Poonamallee to Vadapalani line, families seeking space at lower rates than Porur, and long-horizon investors who accept that the market is slow. It is not for buyers who need resale liquidity within two to three years.
Verdict
The metro makes Poonamallee a better-connected outpost than it was last year, but the market data in the zone is soft. Let price discipline do the work: the station is a reason to consider the town, not a reason to overpay.
