Chennai Metro's Purple Line, Corridor 3 of Phase 2, runs from Madhavaram to SIPCOT Siruseri: about 45.4 km and 47 stations after CMRL's 2023 revision. The city section to Taramani is underground; the OMR section from Nehru Nagar to SIPCOT is elevated, roughly 20 km with about 20 stations. No part of it is open yet, and reported opening dates disagree.
Updated 11 October 2026, the day the first Phase 2 stretch (Poonamallee to Vadapalani, on Corridor 4) was reported for inauguration. That stretch is covered in our main article: Chennai Metro Poonamallee–Vadapalani Line Is Open: Timings, 11 Stations, Fares & Property Impact (2026)
How long is Corridor 3, and how many stations?
Figures vary with the date of the source. Metro Rail Today reported in June 2023 that CMRL had trimmed Corridor 3 from 45.8 km to 45.4 km, with 47 stations, as part of a wider cut to Phase 2. Wikipedia's Purple Line page still shows 45.8 km and 48 stations, split into 26.7 km underground and 19.1 km elevated, with depots at Madhavaram and Semmancheri.
For a buyer the split matters more than the total. The underground half, from Madhavaram through Perambur, Kilpauk, Nungambakkam, Mylapore and Adyar to Taramani, is the slower, costlier build. The elevated OMR half is the part most likely to open first.
Which stations are on the OMR section?
Wikipedia's station table lists 20 elevated stations from Nehru Nagar to SIPCOT, in this order. Earlier press coverage of the OMR stretch (Swarajya and India Infra Hub, May 2023) gives essentially the same list with minor spelling differences. CMRL signage may use different names, so treat these as working names:
- Perungudi end: Nehru Nagar, Kandanchavadi, Perungudi.
- Thoraipakkam belt: Thoraipakkam, Mettukuppam, PTC Colony, Okkiyampet, Karapakkam, Okkiyam Thoraipakkam.
- Sholinganallur: Sholinganallur, Sholinganallur Lake I, Sholinganallur Lake II. Sholinganallur is also the southern terminus of the Red Line (Corridor 5), per Wikipedia's station tables for both lines.
- Semmancheri: Semmancheri Depot, Semmancheri I, Semmancheri II.
- Navalur to Siruseri: Gandhi Nagar, Navallur (Navalur), Siruseri, SIPCOT 1 and SIPCOT 2.
When will the OMR metro open?
Sources disagree, and we have not found a CMRL announcement that settles it. Propspedia (published 27 September 2026, updated 2 October) says the elevated Nehru Nagar to Siruseri SIPCOT section was originally slated for June 2026 and is now expected by December 2026, with the underground section targeted for 2028. Wikipedia's station table shows December 2027 for the elevated stations and December 2028 for the underground ones.
What is verifiable is progress, not a date. Swarajya reported on 18 July 2026 that piling and U-girder casting were 100% complete on the Nehru Nagar to Sholinganallur stretch (contract C3/EV-01, executed by Larsen & Toubro): 3,066 piles and 582 precast U-girders. Track, systems, stations and testing still have to follow, and the first Phase 2 stretch took several months from safety approval to its 11 October 2026 opening. Our reading: plan around 2027 for the OMR section and 2028 for the city section, and treat December 2026 as optimistic until CMRL confirms trials.
Where does Corridor 3 meet the other lines?
- Sholinganallur: with the Red Line (Corridor 5), which runs north via Medavakkam, Alandur and Koyambedu. See Chennai Metro Red Line (Corridor 5): Madhavaram to Sholinganallur Stations, Trial Runs and Opening Timeline (2026)
- Thirumayilai (Mylapore): with the Yellow Line (Corridor 4) and the MRTS, per Wikipedia's Yellow Line page.
- Madhavaram Milk Colony: the northern terminus, shared with the Red Line.
What it means for OMR homes
OMR's housing demand has been built on IT employment and road access, not rail. The metro changes the daily commute most for households living within walking distance of a station who work along the same corridor or in the city centre once the underground section opens. It changes little for homes 3 to 4 km inland from OMR. Below are catalogue projects grouped by the locality in their listing. We have not measured walking distance to a station; check that on foot before deciding.

Padur and Kelambakkam lie south of the SIPCOT terminus, so they are beyond the line as planned. Projects there, such as TVS Emerald Isle and Godrej Azure in Padur, should be judged on road access to SIPCOT, not on the metro. And along the underground city section?
The underground half matters for buyers in North and Central Chennai, on a longer clock (2028 in both Propspedia and Wikipedia). Catalogue examples by locality: Madhavaram, at the northern end, has several new launches including DRA Astra in Moolakadai (Dra Astra Madhavaram Moolakadai) and Prestige Palm Court (Prestige Palm Court Madhavaram); Perambur has Casagrand Mercury (Casagrand Mercury Perambur) and SPR Sky Towers (Spr Sky Towers Perambur Spr City); Kilpauk has Casagrand Dior (Casagrand Dior Kilpauk); and Mylapore and Adyar have Appaswamy Kamadhenu (Appaswamy Kamadhenu Mylapore) and Ramaniyam Anantiya (Ramaniyam Anantiya Adyar). How to use the Purple Line in a purchase decision
- Anchor on a named station, not on 'OMR metro'. A project 400 metres from Navalur station and one 3 km inland are different propositions.
- Assume 2027 for the OMR section unless CMRL announces trials. Do not stretch your budget on a December 2026 date.
- Check the land-use near elevated stations. Tamil Nadu's metro-corridor FSI rules can bring denser buildings near stations over time. Explained: Chennai's 50% Premium FSI Concession Near Metro Lines: What It Means for Flats Along Phase 2 (2026)
- Compare OMR rents and resale against the price, not the metro story. See OMR (IT Corridor) Chennai: A Property Buyer's Guide and Chennai Rental Yields by Locality (2026): What Landlords Actually Earn, from Manapakkam to OMR
- Verify RERA registration and the registered completion date on the Tamil Nadu RERA portal before paying a booking amount.
