Updated 30 October 2026. Trains now stop at Vadapalani on this line. Three different dates are circulating for what comes next, so below we set out each one, who said it, and how much weight it deserves.
When will Panagal Park metro station open?
Our reading: March 2027 is the published target, and it is a target only. We would not plan a move around that month.
- March 2027: CMRL was reported as on schedule to open Vadapalani to Panagal Park by then (Construction World, 5 February 2026; Swarajya, 3 February 2026). This is the most specific date for this stretch.
- Around June 2027: Verified.RealEstate gives this for the Kodambakkam to Panagal Park underground stretch and calls it a construction target, not a guaranteed opening date. It is a community site and it gives no primary source.
- June 2028: Wikipedia shows this for Panagal Park station, marked TBC. It matches the date it shows for Vadapalani to Lighthouse as a whole. Treat it as an outer marker, not an official announcement.
Is Vadapalani to Kodambakkam metro open?
No. The only open Phase 2 stretch is Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani, inaugurated on 11 October 2026, with trains from 6 am to 9 pm since 23 October (DT Next, 21 October 2026). Timings and fares: Chennai Metro Poonamallee–Vadapalani Timings: 6 am From 23 Oct. Eleven stations are in service, and six built on the stretch are to open later: Why Valasaravakkam, Saligramam and Four Other Metro Stations Are Skipped on the Poonamallee–Vadapalani Line (2026)
Does the Panagal Park stretch include Kodambakkam?
It should. Wikipedia shows Kodambakkam as the next station from Panagal Park towards Poonamallee, so it sits between Panagal Park and Vadapalani. The March 2027 reports name the end points and not each station, so we could not confirm whether Kodambakkam opens on the same day. Stations can open later than the line, as has happened on the Poonamallee stretch.
How far has work on Vadapalani to Panagal Park gone?
- Tunnelling: complete between Vadapalani and Panagal Park (Construction World, 5 February 2026).
- Tracks: laying was expected to begin soon after that report. We found no later progress figure.
- Panagal Park station: structure had reached concourse and platform levels, with excavation going on at the lowest level, as of February 2026.
- Role: Panagal Park is one of two main Corridor 4 stations with crossover tracks, used for depot access and emergencies.
Could the March 2027 date move?
Yes. The Poonamallee to Vadapalani stretch was first targeted for December 2025, then February 2026, received Commissioner of Railway Safety approval in May 2026, and opened on 11 October 2026. A section needs track, systems, testing and safety approval after the civil work is done. With February 2026 as the last progress report we have, nobody outside CMRL can say how close March 2027 is today. All corridor dates: Chennai Metro Phase 2 Opening Date: Every Corridor's Status, 2026
What will the stretch change for T Nagar and Kodambakkam?
Construction World says the section gives direct metro access to T Nagar, with an interchange to the Phase 1 network at Vadapalani. So a rider from Porur or Poonamallee could reach T Nagar without a road leg, and riders from the airport or Central side could change at Vadapalani.
Until the section beyond Panagal Park opens, the line would stop there, by our reading. Nandanam, the next station towards Lighthouse, is the Blue Line interchange (Wikipedia), and that link belongs to the later section. So Panagal Park will not give a second Blue Line connection on day one.
What should homebuyers near Kodambakkam and T Nagar do?
Value a home on what you can use today. Measure the walk from the door to the station entry, not to the alignment, and ask about parking and noise if the building is near a station under construction. Our area guides cover prices and risks: T Nagar, Chennai: Buyer's Guide 2026 — Prices, Metro Phase 2, Projects and Risks and Virugambakkam, Chennai: Buyer's Guide 2026 — Prices, Metro Phase 2, Projects and Risks. We make no claim about how much the opening will add to prices.
