Virugambakkam is easy to describe and harder to pin down on the metro. It is an established middle-class neighbourhood on Arcot Road, close to Vadapalani, with a long film-industry association and a reputation for schools. It is also on the Yellow Line, but the stations around it are among those that Phase 2's first opening reportedly skips.
This guide uses Magicbricks' Q3 2026 data, Wikipedia for locality facts and the Yellow and Red Line tables, and press reports for the opening plan.
Location and character
Wikipedia describes Virugambakkam as a residential neighbourhood famous for its schools, market, residential colonies and the residences of film artists, with some of Chennai's oldest film studios. It is about 14.6 km from Fort St George and 12.5 km from Poonamallee, bounded by Saligramam in the east, Koyambedu to the north, Alwarthirunagar to the west and southwest, and K.K. Nagar and Ramapuram to the southeast. It was included in the Madras city limits in the early 1970s. Arcot Road, which Wikipedia calls one of the city's arterial roads, links it to the inner suburbs.
Chandra Metro Mall, opened on 9 April 2011 per Wikipedia, has a five-screen INOX multiplex and a D-Mart; it is a local shopping anchor. Wikipedia lists the Poonamallee to Vadapalani to Broadway bus route as passing through, with the nearest suburban railway station at Kodambakkam, 4 km away.
Metro: the information is conflicting
NativePlanet's list of 11 stations for the Poonamallee to Vadapalani opening, reported by DT Next and UNI for 11 October 2026, does not include any Virugambakkam-area station. NativePlanet adds that six double-decker stations will be bypassed initially: Alapakkam, Karambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Alwarthirunagar, Saligramam and Avichi School. Those are the stations on either side of Virugambakkam.
Wikipedia's Yellow Line page lists Saligramam, Virugambakkam South, Alwarthirunagar and Valasaravakkam between Vadapalani and Porur, and its Virugambakkam page names a Virugambakkam station on Kaliamman Koil Street and Alwarthirunagar station on Arcot Road. Metro Rail Today reports that CMRL's 2023 revision dropped a station named Kaliamman Koil Street. The press name Avichi School may correspond to a station near the Avichi school and college, but we cannot confirm that from our sources. In short, station names and locations are inconsistent across sources; verify the exact station and its opening phase with CMRL before relying on one.
Separately, Wikipedia's Red Line (Corridor 5) table lists a Virugambakkam station on an elevated section, with a March 2027 target, between Natesan Nagar and Alwarthirunagar. Construction World reported on 8 September 2026 that Corridor 5 trials start from November 2026 on the Koyambedu to Chennai Trade Centre stretch, followed by about four months of testing. That makes early 2027 plausible but unconfirmed.
Schools, colleges and healthcare
Wikipedia lists St. John's Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Vani Vidyalaya Senior Secondary and Junior College, Avichi Higher Secondary School, Chinmaya Vidyalaya Senior Secondary School, A.V.M. Matriculation Higher Secondary School, A.V.M. Rajeswari Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Balalok Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Jaigopal Garodia Girls Higher Secondary School and Padma Sarangapani Matriculation Higher Secondary School. Colleges include Avichi College of Arts and Science, Meenakshi Engineering College and Meenakshi Dental College.
For healthcare, a hospital directory lists SBS Hospital in Virugambakkam, offering specialities such as gynaecology and urology. We did not verify other named hospitals or bed counts, so check insurer networks for the hospital you need.
Price levels
Magicbricks' Q3 2026 data (updated October 2026) shows a multistorey apartment average of ₹10,181 per sq ft in Virugambakkam, up 1% quarter on quarter, within ₹7,895 to ₹12,467. These are indicative asking rates. For context, Magicbricks' same-quarter averages are ₹9,602 in Mogappair and ₹15,932 in Anna Nagar, so Virugambakkam sits between a value-led and a premium belt. Knight Frank's H1 2026 price table does not itemise Virugambakkam, and we found no second price source or sourced rent figure.
Projects
Property Point does not currently list a project in Virugambakkam. Nearby options include our Valasaravakkam and Porur coverage (see our Valasaravakkam, Porur and West Chennai guide) and the Mogappair projects. Because new supply is limited in established colonies, many purchases here are resale flats or builder floors, which need extra checks on title, building age, structural condition and approved plans.
Pros
- An established neighbourhood with a dense set of named schools and colleges, per Wikipedia.
- Close to Vadapalani, Koyambedu and Arcot Road's commercial strip.
- Both a Yellow Line and a Red Line station appear in Wikipedia's tables, giving two potential rail links.
- A mid-range price level relative to Anna Nagar, per Magicbricks.
Cons and risks
- Station information conflicts across sources, and the neighbouring Yellow Line stations are reported as skipped at the first opening.
- Red Line timing is unconfirmed, with 2027 as a possibility and earlier targets already missed.
- Limited new supply and no Property Point listing to benchmark.
- Older stock: confirm building age and approvals.
- No sourced rent data.
Who it suits
Families who prioritise established schools and a settled neighbourhood, and who are comfortable buying resale. It is less suited to buyers who need a confirmed metro station on day one or want a wide choice of new launches.
Verdict
Virugambakkam's case is the neighbourhood itself, not the metro. Buy it for the schools and the location, confirm the actual station and opening phase in writing from CMRL, and treat any metro gain as a later upside.
