What is the Dommasandra flyover?
It is a grade separator at Dommasandra on the road network that links Anekal and Attibele to the airport through Sarjapur, Dommasandra and Hoskote, as Oneindia describes it. The work is executed by the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL). It sits where Sarjapur Road traffic meets the Varthur and Hoskote roads, one of the busiest crossings in south-east Bengaluru.
In April 2025, Karnataka's Chief Secretary inspected KRDCL projects in Mahadevapura and found that the grade separator at Dommasandra, the elevated road at Varthur and the railway overbridge at Kadugodi were stalled because of land acquisition, according to Deccan Herald. She directed officials to resolve compensation issues.
What happened in October 2026?
Two inspections by the minister set out where things stand.
- Around 1 October (reported by Urban Acres, citing Prajavani): the minister inspected Sarjapur Road, Dommasandra, Gunjur, Varthur and Balagere. When KRDCL raised land acquisition, he asked why work should wait when space was available on the Varthur lake bund, and told officials to clear debris and lay at least a gravel road on land already available.
- Same inspection: he questioned the delay in removing encroachments between Gunjur and Dommasandra, where shops were reported to occupy more than eight feet of road space, and ordered BESCOM poles and transformers that obstruct traffic to be shifted.
- Same inspection: KRDCL, BMRCL and other departments were told to coordinate road work with the planned elevated road and metro, so roads are not dug up twice.
- Around 12 October (Oneindia): the minister said more than 50% of the flyover remains unfinished after eight years, blamed technical issues, and asked KRDCL, PWD and the GBA to work together. He gave officials 15 days to ease congestion at key junctions on the Dommasandra–Kadugodi road and asked them to widen roads where land is available.
- Same visit: officials were told to build drains along the Dommasandra flyover and act against roadside waste dumping.
When will the Dommasandra flyover be completed?
No date has been given. With more than half the work pending, land issues on parts of the corridor, and three agencies involved, a realistic buyer assumption is that the flyover will not change daily commutes in the near term. The 15-day order is about junction fixes, not the flyover itself. Watch for two signs of real progress: a fresh work order or revised deadline from KRDCL, and visible girder work at the junction.
The short-term fixes can still make a difference you will notice. Clearing encroachments, shifting poles that narrow the carriageway, and laying an interim road near Varthur lake are cheap, quick jobs compared with the flyover. If they are done, peak-hour queues at Dommasandra and Gunjur could ease even while the flyover stays unfinished. If you are deciding in the next few weeks, drive the route again after the 15-day window to see whether anything has changed.
Is metro coming to Dommasandra?
Dommasandra is on the planned Red Line (Phase 3A) from Sarjapur to Hebbal. On 16 October 2026 Asianet Newsable reported that BMRCL has begun soil testing along Sarjapur Road for the 37.8 km line, but the project still awaits the Union government's approval and BMRCL has submitted a revised, lower cost estimate. Our detailed station list and timeline are in Red Line Metro Bangalore: Hebbal–Sarjapur Stations and 2033 Date and Sarjapur Road Metro (Phase 3A, Red Line): What Is Actually Sanctioned in 2026.
In April 2025, a Varthur residents' group also petitioned for a metro link from Dommasandra to Hope Farm via Gunjur and Varthur, Deccan Herald reported. That was a request, not a sanctioned project.
What this means for buyers in Dommasandra, Gunjur and Varthur
Oneindia notes that growing apartment development along the Dommasandra–Varthur corridor has added to traffic pressure. That is the core trade-off here: newer gated projects and more space for the money, against roads that have not kept up.
- Do the peak-hour drive yourself, from the project gate to your office, on a weekday between 8.30 and 10 am. Map estimates on this corridor are unreliable.
- Check which way the project gate opens. A gate onto an internal road behind the junction avoids the worst queues.
- Ask about drainage and flooding on the approach road. The minister's own order mentions drains along the flyover.
- Treat the Red Line as a 2030s benefit. Pay for today's connectivity, and see it as upside if it arrives.
- If you are a tenant-investor, rental demand depends on easy access to ORR and Whitefield offices. Factor in longer commutes when estimating rent.
Which roads around Dommasandra are affected?
The October inspections covered a cluster of connected roads rather than one junction. Knowing which one your daily route uses helps you judge how much the promised fixes will help you.
- Sarjapur Road through Dommasandra: the flyover site itself, with traffic squeezing past the unfinished structure.
- Dommasandra to Varthur via Gunjur: encroachments of more than eight feet reported between Gunjur and Dommasandra, and an interim gravel road ordered on available land near Varthur lake.
- Dommasandra to Kadugodi: the road named in the 15-day order for junction improvements, used by residents heading to Whitefield.
- The Anekal–Attibele to airport route through Sarjapur, Dommasandra and Hoskote: the longer regional link that the flyover was meant to speed up.
- Varthur elevated road and Kadugodi railway overbridge: two other KRDCL works that were also reported stalled over land in April 2025.
Questions to ask before you book in Dommasandra
Developers on this corridor often show distances to Whitefield, ORR and the airport in minutes. Ask for the evidence behind those numbers and check the basics a road project cannot fix quickly.
- Is the project registered with K-RERA, and does its approved layout show the access road width? Read How to Check RERA Registration in Karnataka: 7 Steps for the steps.
- Does the project's approach road depend on the stretch where land acquisition is pending? If so, ask what the alternative access is.
- What is the water source: BWSSB connection, borewells or tankers? Growth here has run ahead of piped supply in many pockets.
- Is the site within a lake buffer or a low-lying area? Varthur lake is close by; see Flood Prone Areas in Bangalore 2026: Lake Buffer Check Before Buying.
- For an under-construction flat, what is the RERA completion date, and how does it compare with when the roads around it might be fixed?
