Updated 30 October 2026. Most coverage of this line dates from 2025. We checked for newer reports and found only one fresh development: on 11 October 2026 the Chief Minister asked the Prime Minister to include the line in Phase 3 and clear it quickly.

Ambattur metro route

The line starts at the existing Koyambedu station and runs through Padi Pudhu Nagar, Mogappair, Ambattur, Thirumullaivoyal and Avadi to Pattabiram on the Outer Ring Road (DT Next, 21 February 2025). It was first planned as a 16.1 km line to Avadi and later extended to Pattabiram. DT Next describes it as an extension of Corridor 5.

Ambattur metro stations named so far

The plan has 19 elevated stations (Swarajya, 20 August 2025). The reports we read name only some of them, and we did not find a full list from CMRL:

  • Koyambedu (existing, start of the line)
  • Padi Pudhu Nagar
  • Ambattur Estate
  • Dunlop
  • OT (Ambattur)
  • Thirumullaivoyal
  • Avadi
  • Hindu College
  • Pattabiram

How much will the line cost?

  • CMRL's DPR, February 2025: about ₹9,744 crore (DT Next).
  • Latest reported figure: ₹9,928.33 crore at 2025 prices, of which ₹464 crore is for three flyovers (Swarajya, 5 May 2025).
  • Preparatory works: the state sanctioned ₹2,442 crore, including ₹2,204 crore for land (Swarajya, 20 August 2025).
  • Funding: expected to mix Union government equity and loans from external agencies (Swarajya).

Which flyovers are part of the plan?

These are the three locations DT Next listed in February 2025. Interchanges are planned at Avadi railway station and the Ambattur bus terminus (Swarajya, 20 August 2025).

  • Ambattur Industrial Estate bus terminus junction.
  • Ambattur-Vanagaram Road junction.
  • Avadi bus terminus to Avadi-Mount Poonamallee Road junction.

Is the Ambattur metro approved?

Not fully. The approval trail so far:

  • 21 February 2025: CMRL submitted the DPR to the state.
  • 28 April 2025: the state accepted it, gave in-principle approval and sent it to the Centre.
  • August 2025: the state sanctioned preparatory works while waiting for the Centre.
  • 2026-27 state Budget: the state again asked the Centre to approve the Phase 3 corridors (Swarajya, 5 August 2026).
  • 11 October 2026: the Chief Minister asked for this line to be included and cleared quickly (ThePrint/PTI; DT Next).

When will the Ambattur metro open?

No date exists. We found no report of main construction contracts for this line, and any opening year on a website or brochure is unconfirmed. The next real sign would be Union approval, then funding and tenders. All three proposed corridors, side by side: Chennai Metro Phase 3 Routes: Kilambakkam, Pattabiram 2026

What does this mean if you are buying in Ambattur or Avadi?

Buy for what the area offers today, such as jobs, schools and your daily commute, and treat the metro as a possible future bonus. Do not pay extra because a seller says a station is coming. The preparatory budget is mostly for land, so if a plot or building is close to the alignment, ask your lawyer to check for any acquisition notice before you pay.
