Updated 19 October 2026. We re-read BMRCL's on-record statements as reported this month, the revised cost figures published today and the safety inspector's observations on the elevated stretch. Most pages that rank for this search still show an older December 2026 date and stop at the station list; this one adds the current deadline, the trial-run sequence, what is still being installed, the cost revision, and what the line changes for neighbourhoods along it.
When will the Pink Line underground section open?
BMRCL's Chief Public Relations Officer, BL Yashavanth Chavan, said trial runs on the entire underground line will start in two to three months, once all systems are integrated. After trials, BMRCL still needs statutory approvals, including the rolling-stock sanction and authorisation from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS). 'We aim to open the line by March 2027,' he told Deccan Herald (5 October 2026).
The deadline has moved before. The original project report targeted completion by March 2016, and construction itself began only in 2020 (Deccan Herald, 19 October 2026). Treat March 2027 as BMRCL's target, not a confirmed opening date.
- October 2024: tunnelling finished (Deccan Herald, 5 October 2026).
- May 2026: track-laying finished.
- October 2026: 750V DC third rail installed and energised at eight stations, Dairy Circle to Pottery Town, including MG Road; the last four, Tannery Road to Nagawara, were expected in about two weeks.
- Coming weeks: trains to be moved from Dairy Circle to MG Road for kinematic envelope tests (clearance checks for a moving train).
- November–December 2026: full-line trial runs, per officials.
- After trials: rolling-stock sanction and CMRS authorisation.
- March 2027: BMRCL's opening target.
What are the 12 underground stations on the Pink Line?
BMRCL has not published a station-by-station list for this section that we could open today. The list below follows Wikipedia's Pink Line page (accessed 19 October 2026). Eleven of these names also appear in a dated progress report on the underground section (India Infra Hub, 29 September 2023), and Deccan Herald's October report names Dairy Circle, MG Road, Pottery Town, Tannery Road and Nagawara. National Military School appears only on Wikipedia, so treat its final name as unconfirmed until BMRCL publishes the opening notice.
- 1. Dairy Circle · planned interchange with the Red Line (Phase 3A).
- 2. Lakkasandra.
- 3. Langford Town.
- 4. National Military School.
- 5. MG Road · interchange with the Purple Line.
- 6. Shivajinagar · next to the Shivajinagar bus hub.
- 7. Cantonment · next to Bengaluru Cantonment railway station.
- 8. Pottery Town.
- 9. Tannery Road.
- 10. Venkateshpura.
- 11. Kadugondanahalli (KG Halli).
- 12. Nagawara · interchange with the Blue Line, under construction.
Will MG Road and Nagawara be interchanges?
Yes, by design. Deccan Herald reports that the underground line will connect the north and south of the city via MG Road, giving Bengaluru its fourth metro interchange (5 October 2026). At MG Road you will be able to change to the Purple Line.
Nagawara is planned as the interchange with the Blue Line, which runs from Central Silk Board to the airport terminals (Wikipedia, accessed 19 October 2026). That line is still under construction; Wikipedia's figures for its KR Puram–airport phase range from late 2027 to 2028 and are not consistent with each other. So a Pink-to-airport change at Nagawara depends on two projects, and only the Pink Line has a near-term target.
Dairy Circle is planned as an interchange with the Red Line (Hebbal–Sarjapur), which is still awaiting central approval, expected in three to four months, with a 2033 deadline (Deccan Herald, 19 October 2026). Our explainer: Red Line Metro Bangalore: Hebbal–Sarjapur Stations and 2033 Date
What is still being installed: signalling and platform screen doors
Systems work covers electrical, signalling and telecom, tunnel ventilation and environmental control, firefighting, and automatic fare-collection gates. Chavan said electrical and mechanical work is complete at most stations, outdoor signalling is complete, indoor signalling is ongoing and traction work is under way (Deccan Herald, 5 October 2026).
This will be Bengaluru's first line with platform screen doors, the glass barriers that open only when a train is aligned. The equipment had been shipped from China and was expected at Chennai port, and base frames were being fitted from Dairy Circle onwards; BMRCL gave no installation timeline. Floor tiling and false ceilings will continue alongside trial runs (Deccan Herald, 5 October 2026). Deccan Herald reports that all underground stations are getting the doors (19 October 2026).
How much does the Pink Line cost now?
Revised data seen by Deccan Herald puts the full 21.26-km Pink Line at ₹17,346 crore, up from ₹8,730 crore in the project report and about ₹12,000 crore in the previous revision. The 13.76-km underground section alone will cost ₹13,876 crore, or ₹1,008.43 crore per km (Deccan Herald, 19 October 2026).
The report attributes the rise to tendering delays, expensive tunnelling, higher prices of materials such as aluminium and copper, land rates, interest during construction (not in the original estimate), and platform screen doors that were costed low in the 2011 report. Namma Metro's whole Phase 2, which includes the Pink Line, is now pegged at ₹40,425 crore, up from ₹30,695.12 crore; the state cabinet has approved the escalation and the Centre's assent is awaited (Deccan Herald, 19 October 2026). The cost revision does not, on its own, change the March 2027 target.
Has the elevated section got CMRS approval?
Not without conditions, as of the latest reports. The CMRS (Southern Circle) inspected the Kalena Agrahara–Tavarekere elevated stretch on 6–8 October and, in a letter dated 9 October, listed 36 observations for BMRCL to address before passenger operations, covering evacuation arrangements and signage, earthing on the viaduct, pitting on rails, rolling-stock documentation and lifts (Metro Rail News, 16 October 2026).
DK Shivakumar has written to the Prime Minister asking for an inauguration date in October; once the 7.5-km stretch opens, the network will reach 103.6 km (Asianet Newsable, 15 October 2026). Deccan Herald said today that the stretch is expected to open 'in the coming days' (19 October 2026). Which neighbourhoods does the underground line serve?
The underground stations run through some of Bengaluru's oldest and most built-up areas, where new supply is scarce and most homes are resale or small redevelopments. A station opening helps daily commutes first; we make no forecast about prices.
- South end: Dairy Circle, Lakkasandra, Langford Town and Richmond Town, between Hosur Road and the CBD.
- Central: MG Road, Shivajinagar and the Cantonment railway station area, where the Purple Line, the bus hub and suburban trains meet.
- North-east: Frazer Town, Pottery Town, Tannery Road, Venkateshpura and KG Halli.
- North end: Nagawara, the gateway to Hennur Road, Thanisandra and the Manyata Tech Park area. Our area guide: Nagawara, Bengaluru: Buyer's Guide 2026 — Prices, Metro, Projects and Risks
