When will the airport metro open? Status as of October 2026
The line opens in three pieces, and each has its own date. These are the latest dated statements we found.
- Silk Board to KR Puram (Phase 2A): BMRCL managing director PC Jaffer said on 16 October 2026 that trial runs between Byappanahalli depot, KR Pura and Marathahalli are targeted by 15 November. About 2 km of track was still to be laid, signalling was the main pending work, and all stations except Central Silk Board were to be finished by November. BEML has delivered two trainsets, enough to start trials. The target is to finish work by March 2027 and open by May 2027, subject to testing and safety clearance.
- Why not 2026: Swarajya reported on 16 August 2026 that a BMRCL official said commercial operation within 2026 was not feasible. Deccan Herald reported on 19 August that work at Marathahalli and Silk Board stations was behind the rest of the line.
- Hebbal to airport (27.44 km, part of 2B): BMRCL had planned to open it by June 2027. Deccan Herald reported on 20 August 2026 that the IAF Yelahanka to airport terminal package was only about 80% complete and its contractor had sought time until March 2027. Trial runs and commissioning take at least six months after civil work, so this section is unlikely before September 2027.
- KR Puram to Hebbal (about 11 km, part of 2B): BMRCL aims to open it by December 2027.
- Whole line: Wikipedia's line page shows dates ranging from 2027 to December 2028 across sections. Treat late 2027 to 2028 as the realistic window for the full Silk Board to airport ride.
How the airport section is being built
- Package 1: Hebbal to Bagalur Cross, 11.67 km.
- Package 2: IAF Yelahanka to Airport Terminal, 15.01 km.
- Package 3: the at-grade section and underground tunnel and stations inside the airport.
- Interim plan reported by Deccan Herald: run trains on both tracks between the airport and Yelahanka, and on a single track between Yelahanka and Hebbal until Kempapura station is ready, because Hebbal station has no turnouts for reversing trains.
- Pending works reported in August 2026: an open web girder over the railway line at Yelahanka and composite girders near the tracks at Doddajala and Shettigere, all needing railway line and power blocks.
Homes near the Outer Ring Road stations
The ORR stations serve Bengaluru's densest office corridor. Prices here already carry a premium. The figures are Square Yards asking prices for apartments (new and resale together), June 2026 quarter, read on 17 October 2026.
- HSR Layout: about ₹17,638 per sq ft (headline figure).
- Bellandur: about ₹16,050 per sq ft. See Bellandur, Bengaluru: Buyer's Guide 2026 — Prices, Metro, Projects and Risks.
- Kadubeesanahalli: about ₹14,500 per sq ft.
- Marathahalli: about ₹15,300 per sq ft (Dec 2025: ₹12,150). See Marathahalli, Bengaluru: Buyer's Guide 2026 — Prices, Metro, Projects and Risks.
- Doddanekundi: about ₹13,000 per sq ft.
- KR Puram: about ₹11,450 per sq ft. See Kr Puram.
- Projects near the ORR stations include Brigade Lakefront Crimson Marathahalli and Godrej Lake Gardens Bellandur. Confirm the walking distance to the nearest station entrance yourself.
Homes near the KR Puram to airport stations
North of KR Puram the line runs through older layouts first, then the Hebbal and Yelahanka belts, then the airport zone. Prices fall as you move away from Hebbal.
- Horamavu: about ₹8,750 per sq ft (Dec 2025: ₹6,650).
- Kalyan Nagar: about ₹7,900 per sq ft. This looks low for the area and swung from ₹9,700 in December 2025, so the listing base is thin.
- Nagawara: about ₹11,600 per sq ft. This will be a Blue and Pink Line interchange.
- Hebbal: about ₹17,100 per sq ft. See Hebbal-Kempapura, Bengaluru: Buyer's Guide 2026 — Prices, Metro, Projects and Risks.
- Jakkur: about ₹13,000 per sq ft.
- Yelahanka: about ₹10,100 per sq ft.
- Devanahalli, beyond the airport stations: about ₹9,600 per sq ft. See Kempegowda Airport.
- A project near the Hebbal station: Brigade Laguna Hebbal.
Worked example: paying today for a 2027 metro
Compare a 1,300 sq ft flat in Marathahalli and in KR Puram, both near Phase 2A stations, at area asking averages.
- Marathahalli: 1,300 × ₹15,300 = ₹1,98,90,000, about ₹1.99 crore.
- KR Puram: 1,300 × ₹11,450 = ₹1,48,85,000, about ₹1.49 crore.
- Difference: about ₹50 lakh. Part of it is office proximity, not the metro, because both areas get stations.
- If the ORR section opens in May 2027 as targeted, a buyer moving in today waits about seven months for the service. If it slips again, the wait grows. Price the home on what works today and treat the metro as a dated upside.
What the airport metro changes for buyers, and what it does not
- It gives ORR residents a rail option along the corridor where traffic is worst. That supports rental demand near stations from 2027.
- It links the north (Hebbal, Yelahanka) to the airport by rail. Until 2B opens, the airport commute stays by road.
- Interchanges matter: Silk Board (Yellow), KR Puram (Purple), Nagawara (Pink) and, later, Hebbal and Agara or Ibbaluru (Red and Orange, both only approved). See Red Line Metro Bangalore: Hebbal–Sarjapur Stations and 2033 Date.
- It does not change a project's approvals, title or delivery record. Check the RERA page, the plan sanction and the khata before paying.
- Construction phases bring noise, diversions and blocked access. Buyers moving in before 2027 near Marathahalli, Silk Board or the KR Puram to Hebbal stretch should expect that.
